New York City is getting a new area code. The 465 area code goes into effect on June 18, 2026, overlaying the existing 347, 718, 917, and 929 area codes that serve the city’s boroughs, according to an announcement from Verizon. The addition reflects the relentless demand for new phone numbers driven by population growth, business expansion, and the proliferation of connected devices across the five boroughs.

Under the overlay system, existing phone numbers remain unchanged, but new assignments may receive the 465 prefix. The practical impact for most New Yorkers is minimal on a day-to-day basis, though the change does mean that residents and businesses in the affected regions should ensure they are dialing all ten digits — area code plus local number — for every call, even within the same area code. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator, which oversees area code assignments across the continent, has been tracking declining number availability in the 347/718/917/929 region for several years.

The 465 overlay is the latest in a long series of area code additions for New York City. Manhattan’s 212, once the city’s sole area code and still a status symbol in business circles, was supplemented by 646 in 1999, then 332 in 2015. The outer boroughs and mobile numbers have gone through a similar expansion, with 718 joined by 347, then 929, and now 465. Each new code reflects not just population growth but the explosion in per-capita phone number consumption — a single professional might now have a mobile number, a work line, a business fax, and a secondary line for services.

For businesses, the new area code carries both operational and branding considerations. Companies that have built marketing around recognizable 212 or 718 numbers will see no change to existing lines, but new hires and satellite offices may receive 465 numbers. Telecom providers including Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile are expected to begin issuing 465 numbers once the existing supply in the overlay pool is further depleted.

The area code expansion also serves as a barometer of the city’s connectivity infrastructure. Despite the rise of internet-based communication platforms, traditional phone number assignments continue to grow as businesses require dedicated lines for customer service, delivery services, and compliance-related communications. The 465 rollout is expected to provide sufficient number supply for the region for approximately the next decade, according to industry projections.
